Divorce can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding your financial position and what your future might look like. At AJN Financial, we walk alongside you through every stage of the process, helping you gain clarity, reduce financial stress, and move forward with confidence.
Contents
1. How It Works
We work alongside your lawyer, and we provide strategic, compassionate financial advice tailored to your unique situation. Whether you’re just starting the process or reviewing a proposed offer, our role is to help you understand what each option means, and what kind of life it could realistically support.
2. Getting Prepared
Your first step is to contact us.
We’ll arrange a Discovery Meeting to talk through your goals and concerns, and guide you on what documents to gather to help build a complete financial picture. We create a detailed financial outline that includes all relevant information to support your discussions with your lawyer.
Typical documents include:
Assets & Liabilities:
- Bank and credit card statements
- Mortgage and loan documents
- Superannuation and investment statements
- Family trust and business information
- Any other significant assets (e.g. property,
shares, etc)
Income & Expenses:
- Pay slips and tax returns (personal and business)
- Insurance policies
- Any other employment benefits.
- An idea of your expenses, but don’t worry if you can’t.
We then check for gaps and ensure you have a clear, accurate picture of your financial position before settlement discussions begin.
3. Choosing the Right Legal Support
If you haven’t yet found a family lawyer, we can recommend someone suited to your needs. We work closely with trusted legal professionals who understand the emotional and financial complexities of separation, including cases involving children, financial abuse, or complex financial structures.
4. Desigining the Right Settlement.
We use our expertise and financial modelling tools to test different scenarios, as provided to us by your Family Lawyer, and identify what structure will best meet your needs now and into the future. We then prepare a concise, clear brief for your lawyer, with financial modelling that can show the different outcomes from the different scenarios.
5. After the Settlement
Once an agreement is reached, we provide you with Comprehensive Financial advice for your next chapter. This includes strategies for budgeting, investment, superannuation, cash flow, and understanding you longer term aspirations.
6. Real Clients. Real Results
Sue, 52
Stay-at-home mum of three teenagers, anxious about her financial future after a long-term marriage. Her solicitor referred her to us when she felt overwhelmed and unsure if the proposed settlement would be enough. We:
-
Helped her understand the impact of different asset splits (e.g., 50/50 vs 70/30)
-
Modelled options such as keeping the home, selling investments, or renting
-
Showed the long-term outcomes of each strategy
Now Sue feels confident about her future and her ability to provide for her children’s education and housing.
Michelle
A single executive who is highly capable but not confident when it comes to personal finances. She wasn’t sure if the offer on the table would sustain her lifestyle.
We:
-
Helped her define her living expenses and financial needs
-
Modelled the long-term impact of the proposed settlement
Michelle now knows she’s going to be okay.
Louise, 65
Newly divorced, overwhelmed, and unfamiliar with managing money. She didn’t know how much she needed or what anything cost.
We:
-
Helped her understand her day-to-day living costs
-
Modelled her needs over time to show her how much was “enough”
-
Worked with her lawyer to secure a more suitable settlement
Today, Louise feels financially secure and in control of her future.
